The Essential Bike Maintenance Schedule for Beginners
When you first purchase a bike its likely that you are not thinking about bike maintenance that may be required down the road. Excitement about getting out on the road and feeling the wind whipping through your hair kind of takes over. We totally get it. And, we’re here to solve your problem with this easy to follow bike maintenance schedule.
Schedule of Bike Maintenance Tasks
Every Ride
- Tire pressure, wear and tear, and quick release knobs
- Brake inspection
- Chain lubrication if necessary
- Bolt inspection and tightening
- Clean your bike after the ride
Monthly or 500 Miles
- Lube and inspect the chain
- Closely inspect brake pads
- Inspect cleats on shoes and pedals
- Remove wheels and wipe frame from top to bottom. Look for imperfections in the paint or frame.
- Check wheels for loose spokes
Every 6 Months or 2,500 Miles
- Check spare tube and patch kit
- Inspect condition of hubs
- Check all cables and housings
- Thoroughly review chain, cassette, and chainring for wear
- Clean the drivetrain with biodegradable solvent
- Maintain and lube suspension components (if necessary)
Yearly or 6,000 Miles
- Check all bearing systems and adjust as necessary
- Replace brake pads and brake hoods
- Replace handlebar tape if needed
- Overhaul the pedals to check bearings and add fresh grease
- Check any baskets, racks, or other accessories
