Experience Las Vegas Bike Trails with Your Family Today
Las Vegas is known for many things, but their best kept secret is the plentiful biking trails. With oodles of family friendly routes to choose from, there is a trail to fit every lifestyle and fitness level. Check out our absolute favorite Las Vegas bike trails. Then make sure the kiddos are comfy in a Hamax child bike seat or trailer and get ready to ride.
1. Burkholder Trail
This 3.2 mile trail connects the Lake Mead Parkway to the River Mountain Loop Trail in Henderson. Whether you are continuing from one trail-head to the next or out for a leisurely ride this paved path is perfect for families. The path runs along the North side of Heritage park and includes beautiful landscaping and lighting. There are also benches placed strategically along the way if you need to take a quick snack break. There are several street crossings so we don’t advise this path if you have older children on their own bikes. Make sure to bring sunscreen along as there is not much shade on the Eastern leg of the path. Check out this map of the route and start planning your ride today.
2. Historic Railroad Trail
The Historic Railroad Trail hugs the hills on the Southern shoreline of Lake Mead and offers panoramic views. The riding surface is hard packed dirt and gravel for the full 3.7 miles. The path is wide, but do take care as there are no guard rails in place. You don’t want to miss the 5 tunnels blasted through the hills in 1930. Originally for trains to pass through, they now welcome those on bike or on foot. The end point of this trail drops you at the visitor parking lot for the Hoover Dam. To reach the Hoover Dam Visitor Center, take the elevator down to the first level and follow the signs. Start planning your trip with this handy map today!
3. Wetlands Park
The Wetlands Park bicycle trail runs in a loop for 14 miles. About 9.5 miles of the trail are paved providing plenty of space for cyclists of all ages and experience levels. While the Nature Preserve does not allow bikes, it features three distinct habitats where visitors can escape the city and the desert. Bring a picnic to enjoy in designated outdoor areas or stop by the Picnic Cafe to dine inside. View a map of the Wetlands Park and bike trails here.
4. Pitman Wash Trail
This trail follows the typically dry wash as it meanders through residential neighborhoods around Henderson. The paved trail is 4 miles long and runs path both Pecos Legacy Park and the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex. These two areas feature benches, picnic tables, water fountains, restrooms, and playgrounds. The trail is completely separate from any parallel roads and uses bridges and tunnels to cross the larger cross streets. Grab a map here and get ready to ride.
5. Union Pacific Railroad Trail
This paved trail is perfect for lovers of railroads and trains. Running alongside an active track for 6.8 miles you will be able to experience all the sights and sounds of cargo trains. Make sure to bring water and sunscreen as shade is limited along the route. As a treat, stop at the Acacia Park at the trail’s north end for a quick cool down in the splash pad. This is a great way to get the kids on board with all your bike trips as well! Plan our your day with this easy map.
6. Cornerstone Park
This easy paved path is perfect for families who are testing out riding together. The loop around Railroad Lake is 1.25 miles – enough to get started, but not so much that it overwhelms you or the kiddos. Plus, as you gain endurance and get comfortable riding together you can do the lake loop again and again. Covered picnic areas are available near the parking area, but make sure to bring the sunscreen as there is not much shade on the trail itself.
Whether you’re looking for a beginners trail to get the family going, or want a more challenging route, Las Vegas bike trails have it all. And with plenty of sunshine you can experience the beautiful views year round. Don’t forget your Hamax Outback for the kids. With a built in sun shade and mesh screen it will keep the munchkins cool the whole ride through.
Red Rock Canyon loop. Be prepared to climb, very rewarding ride.
Are there any long bike trails near Vegas? I had hoped for 20 miles or so.
Yes. Consider the River Mountain Loop Trail. Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7D8Gaf0PXzY
The River Mountains Loop Trail runs for more than 35 miles on a loop around the River Mountains.
It is located between the town of Henderson and Lake Mead, about 30 minutes southeast of the Las Vegas Strip.
The trail is open to hikers, bicycles and a portion for horses.
